Minors: Gerrit Cole strikes out nine, Stetson Allie drives in four

Transactions: Chad Qualls was placed on the bereavement list by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Jeff Locke was optioned back to Indianapolis. Jared Hughes and Yamaico Navarro were recalled to take their spots on the roster. Also, Phil Irwin was promoted from Altoona to Indianapolis which combined with the Locke move should allow Justin Wilson to finally move to the bullpen and get ready to come to the majors in September potentially.

AAA - Indianapolis Indians (74-52) - Lost to the Rochester Red Wings 2-1 in 10 innings. Rick VandenHurk pitched eight innings, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out five. Doug Slaten pitched 2-3 of an inning scoreless. Tim Wood (5-6, 2.24 ERA) took the loss after allowing a run on two hits in one inning. Brock Holt (.382) continues to pile up the multi-hit games at AAA, going 2 for 4. Brandon Boggs (.266) also went 2 for 4.

AA - Altoona Curve (59-64) - Lost to the Portland Sea Dogs 2-1. Gerrit Cole (3-5, 3.19 ERA) pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out nine. Jeff Inman pitched two scoreless innings. Ramon Cabrera (.259) went 2 for 4. Christian Marrero (.200) went 1 for 3 with a solo home run, his first of the year.

High A - Bradenton Marauders (56-66) - Beat the Charlotte Stone Crabs 5-4. Casey Sadler pitched 5 2-3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out three. Jhonathan Ramos (6-1, 3.83 ERA) got the win after pitching 2 1-3 scoreless innings. Doug Salinas pitched a scoreless inning to pick up his seventh save. Gustavo Nunez (.429) went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Alex Dickerson (.305) went 2 for 4 and drove in a run. Dan Grovatt (.259) went 1 for 4 with a solo home run, his seventh of the year.

Low A - West Virginia Power (52-71) - Lost to the Kannapolis Intimidators 4-3 in 13 innings. Robby Rowland pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and striking out three. Porfirio Lopez gave up a run on four hits and five walks while racking up seven strikeouts in 5 2-3 innings. Emmanuel De Leon (1-5, 5.40 ERA) took the loss after allowing an unearned run on two hits. Eric Avila (.286) went 2 for 3 with a double and a solo home run, his fifth of the year.

SS - State College Spikes (29-27) - Beat the Jamestown Jammers 9-3. Joely Rodriguez (3-1, 3.12 ERA) pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two. Ryan Hafner, who has been excellent since being moved to the bullpen, pitched three scoreless innings. Kevin Kleis gave up a run on three hits in one inning. Walker Gourley (.263) went 3 for 5 with a double. D.J. Crumlich (.273) went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Jacob Stallings (.265) went 1 for 3 with a triple and an RBI. Chris Diaz (.205) went 1 for 5 and drove in two runs. Samuel Gonzalez (.214) went 1 for 3 and drove in two runs.

GCL - GCL Pirates (31-21) - Beat the GCL Blue Jays 12-11. Jonathan Sandfort pitched 2 1-3 innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out one. Aneudy Merejo gave up three runs on three hits in 1 1-3 innings. Martires Cadet gave up three runs on one hit in 2-3 of an inning. Luis Campos struck out four but gave up a run on two hits in 2 2-3 innings. Wilson Lee (4-0, 3.04 ERA) got the win even though he allowed three runs on four hits in 1 2-3 innings. Isaac Sanchez got the final out of the game to pick up his first save. Andrew Lambo (.467) went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Max Moroff (.313) went 2 for 3 with a double and an two run home run, his first of the year, and drove in three runs total. Eric Wood (.294) went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Stetson Allie (.217) went 2 for 5 and drove in four. Dilson Herrera (.275) went 2 for 4. Kevin Ross (.262) went 1 for 3 with a solo home run, his first of the year.
